MODERATOR

Gritt Uldall-Jessen, dramatiker

Hvordan konstitueres fiktionskontrakten inden for Niko Raes’ performances?

(Heidi Laura, in: weekendavisen, 2007)

THE PROJECT
For a period now, I’ve been studying and working on ‘forced movements’ in live-art and in photography. It’s a study of how a seemingly relaxed body can be manipulated , moved and frozen by an outer force.

How it can be moved and stretched into different forms and shapes. Seeing how this will resolve into the movement it has to make and the result of the images at the end.

How does a body move and freezes as it’s been pulled, pushed and restrained in different ways?

In this way I want to create non-natural forms and images. To do so, I want to work on a double project; a liveperformance and a serial of photographic images. Niko Raes 2009

WORKSHOPS (Part 1-3)
In these workshops I want to give people the opportunity to experience and learn about performance, endurance, perception and self-control. It will be a search on how to know your own body and how to use it as a medium, on how a body in distress can be beautiful and how these contradictions can work.In each part we will be working with different themes (as listed below).
These themes will be a guideline we use in exercises and performances in front of the camera and your co-participants, who will generate as an audience. Every workshop will be documented and at the end of the series, every participant will receive a dvd from the workshop(s) they were in.

“The portrait project is about migration and mobility.
Between countries, classes and the sexes.

J. Jackie Baier August 2009

What is the portrait project ?

The Portrait Project is a collaboration between warehouse9 and photo artist J. Jackie Baier  supported by the danish Arts Council DIVA program
(Danish International Visiting Artist Program).

kunstraadet

The project emerges from Warehouse9′s involvement with the queer community, the local environment Vesterbro in Copenhagen and the international arts scene.

For several years Jackie Baier has portrayed transsexuals, sex workers and personalities from the queer sexual underground, which was also show at a solo exhibition in Warehouse9 in Fall 2007.

Through the DIVA residency program it is now possible for Jackie to work “on location” in Copenhagen for a period of 3 month in the fall and winter 2009.
Jackie will use this opportunity to meet and portray the invisible faces of sexual migration.

“As a professional transsexual artist I feel related to this environment and the artistic challenge for  me is to give images and faces back to the people they belong to. All these people come with faces. I see their beauty and I want to help them to get their right for a visual representation free from the taboos of the middle class society and free from sensational journalism and “art photography”.

In the warehouse there will be set up a photo studio, where people are invited to come and have their portraits made. The deal is that the model gets a copy and the wall gets a copy.

In the end of this ongoing process we will have made a lot of portraits given to the individual models which will have their own destiny and stories to tell depending on where they go to. There will also be an exhibition and hopefully  a book with stories, portraits and statements that show the exiting & beautiful faces of migration & mobility.

What will be the result

The result is a series of portraits that will be given to the involved models as well as an exhibition and a hopefully book about the project.

Get your portrait  !

If you are interested in being involved in the project as a model or as someone who is involved with the sexual  migration and mobility scene, please do get in contact with us and visit us in the photo studio.

You will get your own original art photography taken in a friendly and personal environment.
Before the portrait you will talk to the photographer and an assistant about the project and how the images will be used in the exhibition afterwards. The whole session is a personal meeting between the artist and the model and is confidential.

This is a purely artistic project and no names will be registered.

Warehouse9 is an independent art space that supports the queer community and full artistic and personal freedom. The images will be used only in an artistic context.
