introduction INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART FESTIVAL

INTRODUCTION by Jørgen Callesen & Gritt Uldall-Jessen

The festival will be in two parts.

One part is Visions of Excess curated by Lee Adams from London with its own artistic profile.

The other part is Warehouse 9′s own supplement to our first international festival in the Project Live Art Context, which aims to contextualize Live Art and Performance art locally, nationally and internationally. The festival is reflecting our broad approach and interpretation of the genre. In the festival we combine tendencies within body art, new circus, burlesque, experimental stage art and visual art. Furthermore we have a strong focus on queer artists and femininity. This is not a general theme for the festival even though we wish to make visible and empower femininity. Many of the presented pieces are from different angels and positions raising discussions about normative structures and how they influence and construct gender. Questions which are raised are: What narratives and what values concerning gender are following the representation of femininity in the piece. Is there a critique of patriarchy and do the pieces mobilize a change in thinking and action. Are the audience left in a passive safe position or in what way is the audience involved in the situation of the performance.

With our new live art venue Warehouse 9 as a frame, we wish to create new hybrid forms between art exhibition, stage arts and club performance. We wish to create new relations between artist, work of art and the audience, which is also the theme of the seminar on Sunday 25th of October, where Dr. Gavin Butt from Goldsmiths College in London will introduce with a lecture followed by artist talks with several of the participating artists.

CURATORIAL STATEMENT
Gritt Uldall-Jessen & Jørgen Callesen October 2009

We would like to serve the intentions of the artist unaffected by actual tendencies and trends. We are concerned with the question about how it is possible to build a context that will facilitate the artists work from their own conditions. We wish proactively to fight tendencies that “exploit and exacerbate the natural fear of difference” which Umberto Eco describes as a sign of UR-FASICM in his essay in the New York Review of Books in 1995.
Many of the presented artists at the International Performance Art Festival 2009 relate to the early Live Art pieces by Ron Athey and Franko B but there are also other references and comments to for example Dita Von Tease and Marilyn Manson who have created a scene within mainstream culture or the the main stream sex industry. The presented artists have a playful and sometimes also humorist approach to their material which gives witness to strategies and an awareness that goes further than the discourse about the “loss of identity” and “a refusal to allow the sense of reality to invade and control the sphere of emotions” which according to Lea Vergine in her essay “The Body As Language” from 1974 was characteristic for Body Art at the time.

In the pieces there is a power of manifestation, integrity and attack on the everyday present structures in contemporary society which are nourished by “the fear of difference” or UR-FASICM.

fem_slash Fun, Juicy and subversive: Slash (Or FEMslash, If it is women) is a far too unknown phenomenon in Denmark. We are going to change that. Slash simply means that you “borrow” two heterosexal mainstream Hollywood characters and let them collide. The main issue is a highly charged sexual content and main characters of the same sex, who in the original context had no intention of a relationship. In this way femslash is a subversive attack on the heteronormative pop culture – pornographic snipers against the sexually unimaginative media giants.CGLFF (Copenhagen Gay & Lesbian Film Festival) is flirting with the genre and wish to celebrate the most popular Femslash-couples in history with this program of the best slash-videos. Furthermore the evening offers fan art and hot stories and will climax with the announcement of the winner of the CGLFF writing competition. Remember to submit your slash story. The best story will be read by a secret celebrity. Submit your very own slash before the 12. October to maja(at)cglff.dk and win slashed awards and the status of a superhero. Conditions: The story must be maximum 5 pages and the romance must be between two fictional heterosexual characters of the same sex.

Although I am inclined to rebel against should, it would be closer to the truth to admit that I actually did not know how to queer femininity, photographically speaking, without providing more fuel for heterosexist fantasies of feminine lesbians waiting for real men. I also asked myself if the world actually needed anymore images of “pretty women”, since proud, powerful images or portrayals of masculine women are still so rare on screen or in print “(pp. 11 Femmes of Power – Exploding queer femininities – Del Lagrace Volcano & Ulrika Dahl, Serpents Tail 2008 London.)

CURATORS STATEMENT (English)
Visions of Excess Curatorial statement.

In keeping with the spirit of the man whom Andre Breton dubbed ‘the excremental philosopher,’ we are particularly looking to program work that contextually crosses over from alternative cultures into an art context, and established artists whose work has transformational qualities that reach beyond the gallery/museum lens. Our goal with Visions of Excess is to create a phenomenal experience that is greater than the sum of its [already excessive] parts that will resonate with audiences for many years to come. Our intention is not merely to curate a group exhibition, but to lay down the map for a journey. The concept for Visions of Excess is not a tidy one, it is our aim to curate a perfect mess, strategize a series of installation options, stage acts of defiance, frame out space but leave room for spontaneous experiences to develop. In the end the event will create a vertiginous ‘total derangement of the senses’ that is designed to open up space for thought and action, personal transfiguration and the expansion of consciousness, because, aside from watching, listening and viewing, the nature of the work we have programmed has always been highly transformational, suddenly audience have found themselves on the set of a Bruce La Bruce photo shoot, performing in a peep-show, having a one-on-one audience with Warhol legend Udo Kier, or being sandwiched between Kira O’Reilly and her mother in a lap-dance booth. Each event has taken on a life of its own.Lee Adams and Ron Athey.

nao_bustamante_web Nao Bustamante is an internationally known performance, video and installation artist originating from the San Joaquin Valley of California. Her (often precarious) work encompasses performance art, sculpture, installation and video. Bustamante has presented in Galleries, Museums, Universities and underground sites all around the world. She has exhibited, among other locales, at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, the New York Museum of Modern Arts, Sundance 2008, and the Kiasma Museum of Helsinki. In 2001 she received the prestigious Anonymous Was a Woman fellowship and in 2007 named a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellow, as well as a Lambent Fellow. Currently Bustamante holds the position of Associate Professor of New Media and Live Art at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The “Silver & Gold” video is based on a performance event where she transports between live action and video narrative. Stirred by legendary filmmaker Jack Smith, Bustamante interprets Smith’s muse: 1940s Dominican movie starlet Maria Montez. Honing-in on Smith’s interest in Hollywood’s obsession with the reproduction of the exotic, Bustamante will embody Miss Montez. The new video is the fruit of a commission by the LIVE FILM/ Jack Smith festival, co-organized by Arsenal Institute for Film and Video Art and Hebbel-am-Ufer Theater (HAU) in Berlin.

Narcissister is a performance artist with a background in professional modern dance, fine art and design. Her most formative training took place at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. Among her professional highlights was being selected to perform with the Ailey company in Memoria. In her latest solo showcase “LadyLike” see artist Narcissister employ image-scavenging in strikingly original neo-burlesque vignettes. In a clever deconstruction of popular media, Narcissister’s explicit moves reveal the manifold corporeal pleasures of female sexuality and suggest a gender which is equivocal, elusive, and bold. In her characteristic series of self-pleasuring, self-seeking, self-loving stunts, Narcissister delivers a language few women master and even fewer dare even to speak. This event displays Narcissister’s extensive use of intermedia involving live performance, original videos, and handmade props and costumes. Permeating the spectacle will be a cast of local women in Narcissister drag, each in turn enlisting its audience in her spellbinding service. By immersing the audience in Narcissister’s rousing flux of pure undiminished vanity, this project sees its performer’s Narcissean powers reach exponential levels. As Narcissister’s startling image is mirrored from screen, to audience member, back to performer, a version of the mythical “pool” by which the original Narcissus was bewitched is created anew.

RAESthisboyneedslove Niko Raes is a young Belgian body-based artist. As much as he is a live- artist and performer, he also works with mediums as photography, video, installation and sculptures. In all of these, he uses his own body and flesh as his material. “It’s the clay of the sculptor, the paint of the painter, the ink of a writer…” He studied photography at the Royal Collage of Arts in Antwerp, where he searched the borders of beauty in life and in art, inspired by Greek myth. Missing reality and honesty in his work, he made the step to performing-arts, dropping the shell of mythology and searched for pure beauty and emotion in his physically strong work, as he still does today. His live performances can be seen as a combination of body-performance, physical dance and endurance theater. www.bodyrefuse.be

THIS BOY NEEDS LOVE A naked white body hanging in the void…with water dripping and penetrating its skin like Japanese torture…washing everything away…revealing its true nature…waiting to be loved…with only the sound of dripping water and an audience walking trough it, becoming one with this boy… ‘This boy needs love’ is an endurance-performance about the slow but painful suffering one goes through, while missing love.

introduktion

INTERNATIONAL PERFORMANCE ART FESTIVAL

Introduktion og kurator statement ved Jørgen Callesen & Gritt Uldall-Jessen

Festivalen falder i to dele.

Husk at sende din slash-historie ind!

Festival i Birmingham, UK i 2003. I 2007 forespurgte Fierce! Festivalen en ‘Revisions of Excess’ for deres 10 års jubilæums lukkeevent.

narcissister_web Narcissister is a performance artist with a background in professional modern dance, fine art and design.
